Good Will Ambassadors to the Applicant World

Jon M. Huntsman Hall is impressive. The classes and faculty are stimulating. But what often seals the deal with applicants is current students during their campus visit to Wharton.

Nearly 120 students currently volunteer in giving building tours, running information sessions, and taking would-be applicants to class or out to lunch. They are involved with all aspects of admissions and carry their enthusiasm for Wharton to all who visit.

"They are mostly first-year MBA students, many of whom were active in their undergrad schools," says Stephanie Gampper, WG'04, co-chair of the Volunteer Admissions Committee. "When these first year students were applying to Wharton, many of them were impressed by the VAC during their on-campus visit, and now they would like to give their time to the students who are applying to be part of the MBA Class of 2006."

Wharton Undergrad also has a student component in admissions. Penn's four undergraduate schools have a central Admissions Office, and conduct tours for potential applicants. Wharton Ambassadors take over at the end of the tours and conduct information session for potential applicants and their parents. Approximately 200 students help out in these Admissions activities, mostly freshmen and sophomores.

"Applying to Wharton can be a daunting task, but the Wharton information sessions added reassuring support," says Greg Cohen, W'07, who went through this process last year. "Once I realized how enthused current Wharton students were about their experiences, I certainly did not want to let this special opportunity pass me by."

Applicants learn about Wharton on the School's website, in the media, and on their own initiative, but it is often Wharton students that have the most impact. They are helping to shape their community in a tangible way.

With memories of their own application experience still fresh, tour guides and ambassadors provide a critical human touch to the Admissions process.
